Lecale Gaelic Football

9th May 2023

May is upon us and the commencement of the busiest time of the school year. This week, P7s headed to St Patrick's Park for the annual Lecale Cluster Gaelic Football Blitz. The boys play for the Pat Watterson Trophy and the girls for the Sonia Kinsella Cup and we were the holders of both!

All the teams played each other before the top two faced each other in their respective finals. The girls went undefeated in their group and then had to play St Joseph's Strangford in the final. Their experience shone through and some excellent short passing along with brilliant defence gave them the edge and they won, retaining Sonia's cup for another year.

The boys suffered a defeat in their group and needed a win against St Mary's Dunsford to get to the final. Playing with a strong breeze they led by a goal at the break. Dunsford took control of the game in the second half, but the boys dug deep and played their hearts out to reach the final against St Joseph's Strangford who had beaten them earlier. The final was a nerve-wracking affair with the boys really playing to their full potential and restricting their opponents scoring chances to edge the decider! The Pat Watterson Cup was heading back to St Patrick's!

All the matches were a credit to their schools and the local clubs who coach these stars of the future - Saul, Ardglass, Downpatrick and Kilclief. We were so proud of our P7s who not only demonstrated their prowess on the field, but also were such ambassadors for our school and their families off it - supporting and cheering each other on throughout. Thank you!

Thanks to the cluster schools for coming along:

St Joseph's Strangford, St Mary's Dunsford, St Joseph's Ballycruttle, St Joseph's Killough, St Malachy's Kilclief.
